  • OPT period and acceptance into the University

I have an urgent question with regards to my opt status and how it is affected by my acceptance into the graduate program. I have graduated from a University in USA with a bachelors degree(STEM degree) on May 2013 and my OPT period is from 7/9/2013 to 7/8/2014. I have been working with a company for a while during my OPT period, and I have applied for the graduate program for Spring 2014. I have recently been accepted into the program, and at the same time, my company would like to extend my employment with them. With that said, I want to continue with my OPT and postpone my enrollment into the university for Fall or Spring 2015. The questions that I do have are:

    1) Is my OPT period forfeited because I got accepted into the graduate program? (I did not register for courses yet and I believe that I did not update my I-20 yet)
    2) Is there a possibility to postpone my enrollment for Fall 2014/Spring 2015?

I know I may have to check with the ISO at my university, but I would like to hear your experiences and suggestions about this.

did you apply for same university or different one ?? if it same one then just talk to your dso about it .. if you applied for new school then until you transfer u r sevis to new school your opt will be fine ..

Your OPT wil expire as soon as your SEVIS is transferred, which means if you have new I-20, since uni can only issue you new I-20 when your old uni will Transfer SEVIS. However, if you get offer Letter from New Uni saying that you are accepted then it's fine not got I-20.Bottom Line: New I-20 in hand, OPT out of hand. All the best!
