  • Denial of OPT period at the Port Of Entry

Hi, got admit from a tier 1 university for my masters in MIS for this 2014 spring. My Port Of Entry was at Chicago. The officer at Chicago was a bit rude to me. I gave my passport and immigration form and holding my I-20 in my hand. He was upset and shouted at me while i was saying that it is in my hand. Then he took the I 20 and said ohh nice college and he asked how long do u stay in USA? I said my course is for 2 years and stopped... After typing something he said "Sorry you cannot have your OPT period.. I said why? He replied "sorry u cannot have thats all i can say(in a loud voice)".I was stunned, dont know what to say, kept mum and took the passport which is stamped that i have arrived on 23rd dec. Apart from that nothing is written on my visa , nowhere it is mentioned that OPT period is denied.

Please guide me whether OPT period is decided at the port of entry? If yes its bad because i have taken a loan of 20 lakhs and i had plans to clear it by working during OPT period and i cannot afford to go back to India with such huge amount in debt.

    Kindly reply,
    Thanks.

This sounds really scary but do not panic. Talk to International student office at your university as they have all details of your sevis record and can access the sevis info , they can provide you right information.

I have been noticing this for a while where European tourists/students getting treated way more differently than Asian/African students. Speak to your International office for more information.

any way CBP is not immigration enforcement agency ..all they can do is deny ur entry and report uscis that u r status is invalid .. they cant modify u r status ..

There is nothing really to worry about this if you do qualify for OPT or not. I think he had a bad day may be.. Enjoy your time during your course.. You still do have time to think about this.

As mentioned by another commenter, the OPT can only be granted/denied by the USCIS so do not get worked up over it. Speak to your International Officer about this for further confirmation and enjoy the period of study .
