Urgent: OPT application, Degree Requirements complete but didn't apply for degree

Hello everyone,

I have a big problem. I am a masters student with thesis option and I have converted from thesis to non-thesis in the last week of fall 13 semester. I hadn't applied for graduation due to some misunderstanding even though I intended to graduate in Fall 2013. Since all my non-thesis requirements are met, i want to apply for OPT and look for a job. But International Affairs office says that it can not give OPT to me since I have not graduated even though I have completed my degree requirements and now I have applied for graduation in spring14.
What are the solutions for this, please suggest. I can't afford another semester's fees.

The same thing happened to my frd and he ended up doing masters again. Uscis gave him two options either to do ms again or go back to india

This is ridiculous . Why they are saying they will not give u opt... Once you complete the requirement you of degree you are eligible to get post completion opt even If u did not apply for graduation ,,, you read the us is website and tell them the proper information

Stem extension is different , for that u must have a degree

my case is almost same..completed degree reks in 2012...was on opt in 2013..applied for stem extension few days back and graduating in 2014..any chances of RFE on stem??

Hi Suraj, from your post i understand that as you did not filed for graduation that's the reason you are not being allowed to apply OPT by DSO, though you don't have any courses left for completing the Master's Right? Correct me if wrong.

If above is your case, y do you need to pay fee.

If you finished all core degree requirements other than any course (thesis equivalent) , then you can apply for Post OPT before graduation.

But as we see now USCIS being strict, i suggest not to start your POST OPT before graduation. Later u might come across unnecessary immigration problems.

If you have any course left over finish it and then start your OPT. One semester fee might cost your future Status.

I have to pay fees because i have to be enrolled for maintaining status. I have already finished all my requirements as non thesis. I am not understanding why I need to have a degree when I can clearly apply based on transcripts.

Hi all,
I graduated last dec2013 and i joined one consultancy but i did not get the job yet.Last month i moved to another consultancy and now i applied for the STEM extension.Is there any any problem to get my opt extension ?
