Right time to apply for OPT?

What would be a right time to apply for an OPT? I have 3 months to graduate(in December). Since I have not landed up in a job, I do not know what would be a right time to apply for an OPT. Please let me know.

apply by october end. u can put starting date which can be any date within 60 days after u graduate

Is it possible to extend your graduation by taking up thesis or additional courses ? Ideally, you want to find a job first and then apply for OPT. Also, above suggestion also looks good
