Lost passport with valid F1 visa on OPT, need to go to india for an emergency, stampi

Hi,

I have a valid F1 VISA until 2015. I am currently working as a fulltime in a e-verified company on OPT. My OPT is valid until May 2014. I will be applying for extension eventually. I lost my passport recently with a valid unexpired F1 visa. I need to go to india in october for an emergency.
Is it to safe to go to India for restamping?
Is it safe to go after getting approval for OPT extension?

I would appreciate your suggestions and similar experiences. Thanks!
