  • First H1-B visa appointment

    Hi DesiOPT members

I am on H1 status since Oct1. My previous status was F-1 and I worked on OPT as well. I was with the same employer but as a contractor during OPT and now I am a regular/full time employee.

I would like to do my H-1 stamping in Canada prior to my India trip in February.

My company attorney has sent me all the petition docs such as 797, etc. I am planning to book my appointment soon.

-Does any one know of available appointments in Montreal , Ottawa or Toronto for the month of December?
-Is it OK to go to Canada ( first time H1-B, I am a full time employee)
-If I am asked how long I have been with the employer : the response is 2 years including last 2 months as full time and prior months as contract. that is the truth and is there anything I need to add for that response.

    Thanks

No one here can say what the available appointments are. You will need to check and see for yourself. Just remember that December is one of their peak times because of the upcoming Christmas holidays.
It is okay for you to go to Canada as you have a U.S. degree and have previously obtained an F-1 visa in your home country, presumably. Only your attorney can tell you if there are any other issues regarding your case that would prevent you from going to Canada.
Regarding how long you’ve been with the employer, be honest. You will need to specify it on the DS-160 anyway.

          Hi Desi OPT folks,

I got my H1 approved in 2015 and started from October 2015
I am planning to travel to India an get my H1-B stamped
Was filling out the Visa Interview Appointment form online
It has a question "Passport Issuance Place"
I recently got my passport renewed in US (since my Passport issued in India was about to expire) and it says San Francisco for place of issue
So should i put United states or India (since my passport was originally issued in India)?

While filling DS-160 it had specifically asked for Passport issuance authority, so there i selected India and passport issuance place as San Francisco

Can you please help me out with this question?

          Thanks,
          Talha

It will be SFO. Your online application will have the new passport number which was issued in USA.

Thank you. I went ahead and made my appointments for India. Canada trip proved expensive!

                      - No
                      - Yes, it okay as long as you obtained your F-1 visa in your home country and you obtained US education.
                      - No, there is nothing you need to add.
