F1 to H1 Status Change

Hi,

I came to US in Jan'2015 on F1. I also have a H1 which was applied last year in 2014. Since I do not know it got picked, I came on F1. Now, my employer filed for conversion from F1 to H1. The file was received by USCIS on May 26. There are few questions:

When will I know the result and the status changes from F1 to H1?
How long will it take to process the file?
Do I need to continue studying on F1?
Can I go to India and return after the status is changed?

Please let me know the solution.

It is currently taking about 4 months for H-1B processing. You should continue to maintain your F-1 status. If the H-1B is denied and you have not maintained F-1 status, you will be out of status.

If you leave the country after your status changes to H-1B, you will need to go for H-1B visa stamping and return to the U.S. with the H-1B visa stamp. If you return with the F-1 visa, that will cancel your H-1B change of status.
