  • Working Outside US

    Hi
Right now I am working for a university in US, but will be moving to a university in Europe as a visiting scholar and will be paid through US University.
    I have couple of questions:
    a) Will I be double taxed?
    b) My health insurance from US University is it worth in Europe?
    c) If my US university sponsor H1B for me (right now on OPT) is there a requirement that I have to be in US for some minimum amount of days?

      1. It depends on the country and the treaty agreements between US and the foreign country. You need to speak with a CPA.
      2. It depends on the health insurance plan you have. You need to speak with the insurance company and your employer.
      3. No. They can file H-1B for you even when you are abroad.

Its better if you consult an advisor in the International Student's Office at the university!

Yes, consult your university, especially if your employer is the university itself.

You can file h1 while staying out of US but you need to go stamping to enter to US !

Hi there, in answer to the first question – It depends, and you will need to seek professional tax advice. It may not be the case that you are double-taxed because you are with the same employer but make sure and check. The second question – probably not. Again, check with the insurance provider. If you are not covered, you can pick up an inexpensive plan for overseas travel that covers you for the portion of time you are working abroad. The final question – they can file from abroad.
