I graduated in Aug'16 and now on OPT. I'm planning to marry my gf who is US citizen. Do anyone has en experience how smooth the process is an dhow long does it take. My OPT is expiring in 6 months and i want to file my case for GC before that, will I get any extension on my current status while my case is still pending? Sensible answers are much appreciated....Thanks

You don’t get an extension of your current status. You will need to file the I-130 and the I-485. The I-485 will give you “authorized stay” once your F-1 status ends.
You might want to speak with an immigration attorney before embarking on the process, even if you decide to file the application by yourself.Comment

The 6 months is a red flag, you need to have a convincing story to make up for it. Otherwise, once you're married you're good.Comment

Both application will be in process ,none will impact other ,you can get your extension while gc in process .usually it takes 6 -12 months for the process .Comment

It's not a red flag, as long as you are living together and can show history of dating and are showing enough time living together. Ask me, I went through this experience. Red flags would be: 1) not living together. 2) visa expiring today, getting married the next day and applying for gc the very next day after marriage. 3) not knowing each other well and a short courtship. 4) financial dependency of one on the other.Comment

Just make sure you're living together and mixing all assets and finances.Comment

You can apply for GC even after your opt expiration date but realize that your stay will be unlawful until the day you turn in your adjustment of status application(GC). In the meantime you can get caught and placed in removal proceedings. So plan to apply GC before opt expiration.Comment
