I20 Expiry and reenter option

My I20 got expired but I am still a funded graduate student in University A. I have been given a new I20. Now I am set to travel outside US and reenter to clear status. Can I travel to Mexico or any other countries to clear my status. I still have valid F1 visa in my passport.
FYI I am not Mexican citizen.

If you have maintained F1 status then you do not need to go to mexico

If your new i20 was issued before the old one expired, then you are good.

In your case univ must have issued your I - 20 before the expiration of the current one as, they cannot fund you once your I - 20 expires. No need to travel check the dates and repost a comment incase of any discrepancy.
