Discontinuing CPT in the middle of a semster

Can the CPT be discontinued in the middle of a semester due to various reasons.. like getting laid off, termination, or company runs out of business..etc ? If yes, what is the procedure to be followed as I20 will have an end date of semester last date. In any of the above cases, does discontinuing CPT lands me in trouble ?
What are the steps to be followed to overcome the situation so it won't be a trouble in the future.

Well it shouldn't . You'll have to let your DSO know immediately. They will generate a new i20, wherein you won't have a work authorization.

Talk with your international advisor they will give you new I-20 ....then you will be all set.
