  • Delay in SSN due to Long last name

I am doing my Master's in united states .I applied for CPT to work as a summer intern and received it within a week, then I applied for SSN on June 9 after I received my CPT.Since then I am waiting for my SSN number but getting same reply from SSN officials that it is still pending. My personal information is exactly same as in all the documents(passport ,i20,visa and i-94) but SSN officials couldn't verify my name with DHS online as SSN web application didn't allow more characters to type and every time it said verification failed. My name is too lengthy, so they couldn't verify my name in their website and told me that they need to verify with DHS manually. It's been two weeks and they are still saying they haven't received any verification confirmation from DHS and it might take upto 3-4 weeks.I really don't know whom to contact to speed up the process as I am unable to start my work without SSN.Please help me if you have any idea whom to contact to speed up the process?I already mailed to the company explaining the situation and they agreed to wait for me but if it takes 3-4 weeks definitely am going to lose my job due to some weird reason. Please guide me

What Is Your Full Name ?

My Friend Also Had Same Situation, So SSA Office People Instead Divided First Name Into First Name & Middle Name i.e., They Adjusted The Name Wisely So That There Was No Problem.

I Give An Idea If Possible To Cancel The Application & Make A New One As They Did To My Friend. ---> This Should Be Last Option Or The Worst Case Scenario.

Hello My friend.... Same problem I had. I applied for SSN on april 25th and I received on june 9th.. Reason being, I have a very big name. One Possible solution is to reach out USCIS office and talk to an officer explaining your situation which I did lately. Usually if your name is too lengthy they cannot do a computer verification and it goes for manual verification which takes 4-6 weeks. If you can talk to an officer at USCIS , he or she has a means to convey your urgency to DHS official who is handling your file. Same happened with my case too.

Alternatively, your SSN application letter shows that you dont have to wait until you receive the physical SSN Card to start working. Its mentioned on the letter that you can start working and SSN Application letter you get from SSA office is a proof itself which authorizes you to work. SSN Card is only for W-9 form for IRS To file your taxes. So talk to your employer and see if they agree to let you work and start paying you once you have SSN arrived.

The sooner you start your efforts to reach USCIS is the sooner you will see the result.. Good Luck.... !
