Question on OPT and 212(e) waiver

    Hi All,

I'm a PhD student on F1 visa, planning to graduate in the Summer of 2017. Since I held a J1 visa for a year (before the current F1), I'm also subject to 212(e), aka the two year home residency requirement.

I'd be very interested in doing postdoctoral training in the US upon graduation and am now wondering whether applying for a 212(e) waiver would affect my chances of getting OPT and potentially a STEM extension after that. Would it be better to wait until I'm on OPT to apply for the 212(e) waiver? Having the waiver would be great so that I have the option of transferring to H1B if I need more time to finish my project.

Thanks for your advice! Any input is much appreciated.
